History of the Douglas, Wyoming State Fair and 4h fair and rodeo events
The Douglas Wyoming State Fair has a great history for Wyoming tourism and also a strong force in building community pride for Douglas since the festival started in 1886 as The Territorial Fair as it was first called with its support and backing of the Fair Association of Wyoming. At first it was 80 acres but the true location has been lost with time due to inadequate record keeping, but it was believed to be somewhere along Cheyenne and N. Railroad, near Cheyenne, Wyoming and according to an Wyoming map from around that time, it seems have be fairly accurate. The location was held there for almost half a decade according to records.
Then around the 1900s it was held in Laramie, followed by Sheridan, and next it was on to Casper, Wyoming where it had a much larger show. Around this time, about 500 attendees would be expected to show. Then Douglas became the main location after 1905. The people of Douglas along with the 4-H club and Future Farmers of America got behind the cause around 1980 and it became much larger than the earlier events.
Some earlier events were the Wyoming State Spelling Contest, with every county sending someone to represent them and was supervised the Wyoming Education Department and the Wyoming Transportation Department helping with mapping out the locations. The fair lost momentum during the depression and the WWII bt came back strong afterwards and is the great state fair that you love today.
The Wyoming State Fair is a largely agricultural exposition and rodeo held every August in Douglas, Wyoming. The festival fairground is located on west Yellowstone Highway on the waterside of N Platte River.
In 1905 Douglas won the selection for the state fair and this continue for many year with only a few hiccups along the way: there were no fair events in 1935 to 1937 due to the Depression and no in 1942 to 1945 due to the World War II. The state fair is officially sanctioned by the Wyoming Department of Agriculture. During the fair, up to 455 camping places are available on the south side of the fair ground, parking space is limited.
