The 2014 Vietnam Veterans of America Watchfire ceremony held at the New York State Fairgrounds on May 25. The Vietnam Veterans of America Central New York Chapter 103 are using old pallets, boards, logs and other wood to build the Memorial Day Watchfire at the New York State Fairgrounds. SALT CITY BBQ FESTIVAL on Saturday May 16. CNY Veterans Parade and Expo Watchfire. On Sunday, May 24th the large pyre will honor veterans and offer a way to respectfully retire unserviceable American Flags.
VVA Chapter 685 will be holding a moving ceremony by lighting a large fire to symbolize veterans finding their way home. Open to all veterans, it is the largest veteran event in Galveston County the Sunday before Memorial Day. Also a moving POW ceremony, and flag disposal ceremony. Good food, good music and a new site of the Watchfire inside a 900 acre county park.
This weekend’s watchfire offers a time to reflect on the service and sacrifice of veterans. Clear Path for Veterans and Carpenters Local 277 are assisting with the weekend preparations. The Watchfire was a military tradition that following a battle or long march, a large fire would be started so those missing or lost could locate and rejoin their comrades.
