Thurman Fall Farm Tour Festival – Nine sites in the tiny southern Adirondack Mountain town of Thurman, NY, will roll out the red carpet for visitors and neighbors. Self guide to all of them and you’ll meet the goats and sheep responsible for making the nationally-acclaimed Nettle Meadow cheeses, and while you’re there, let the kids visit the activity tent, sample exotic hors cheese d’oevres, listen to lilting Irish tunes played by the Grafton St. Trio. On to the next stop – Martin’s Lumber – for sustainable forestry woods walks, demos of wood carving, firewood processing, bead-making and see vendors with sterling jewelry, stained glass stepping stones, rustic furniture and more. Next stop – Valley Rd. Maple Farm for pancakes and sales of maple goods, and a geocaching tutorial.
Whitefield’s Farm offers fall veggies, pumpkin painting for the kids, tours of their fine old stone barn and a bit of talking turkey. Toad Hill Maple Farm, nearby, will have evaporator demos and talks and free samples of some of their wares, and the gift shop will be open for stocking up your larder. Young and old alike will love the hay ride to the pasture.
Peru Llama Farm features llama smooches, a demo on llama training and a hay maze for kids to tackle while the host visits with adults about his book on dealing with struggling teens and their struggling parents. Town Hall, just down the road, houses a magnificent show of locally made quilts, mostly new, and a few heritage ones. Some smaller items are for sale. Hidden Hollow Maple Farm is next on the list (though you may proceed in any order), with sugar house tours and talks, fall veggies and great maple products. The Glen Lodge B&B will host a by-reservation-only local foods luncheon, using ingredients from the sites you’ve just visited.
Check how to reserve your spot. Reserve, too, your place in the paranormal investigation scheduled for that evening, beginning at town hall at 6 p.m. and caravanning to an old farm where things go bump in the night. And day. Phone ahead, as only ten may participate.
The fire company will offer BBQ chicken dinner at Toad Hill Maple farm from 1- 5, and raffle drawings will take place there at 5 p.m.
