While many of the celebrations are in the warm weather months when so many visitors and summer residents are in Northern Michigan to enjoy all that we have to offer, don’t miss some special events in the Ski Season such as Krazy Days at Boyne Highlands, Mardi Gras at Nub’s Nub, and Carnival at Boyne Mountain, all in March.

Click here for details on all that there is to see and do every month or scroll down for some of the most popular events that make Northern Michigan special.

Northern Michigan Lamb and Wool festival 2014

Northern Michigan Lamb And Wool Festival – Held at the Ogemaw County Fairgrounds the last weekend of September, Northern Michigan Lamb and Wool Festival showcases fiber for all crafters and non-crafters alike. With over 80 vendor booths, you will find yarn, books, tools, fiber and supplies. There are also vendors with ready-made items such as clothing, soaps, candles, pottery, archery bows, baskets, etc. Enter for daily door prizes and join us Sunday to experience a “sheepishly” fun scavenger hunt for festival bucks. If you’re looking for an intimate, low-key yet comprehensive fiber festival, at the perfect time of year, you’ve come to the right place! We work to bring together fiber fan(atic)s with small producers of fiber products, and we have a great time doing it!

History of the Northern Michigan Lamb And Wool Festival

The Northern Michigan Lamb & Wool Festival got its start in 1998, when Jeanie Prentice went to the Ogemaw County Fair and the Michigan Fiber Festival at Allegan in the same week. She was enchanted with MFF and felt the beautiful Ogemaw County Fairgrounds had a lot of potential for hosting its own fiber festival. Jeanie was particularly interested in trying to bring together shepherds who are interested primarily in wool and those interested primarily in meat production.

She also found that running her own farm and trying to be a vendor at MFF was difficult, because of the distance. Reasoning that other northern Michigan vendors might have the same experience, she approached her local guild and asked what others thought. Two members, Jeanne Stock and Mary Reinke, were immediately interested and promised to help.

The next step was to look for funding to start the festival, and to build a relationship with the fair board. Jeanie talked to shepherd and shearer Jim Bristol, who arranged a donation of $500 from the Michigan Sheep Breeders Association, and $500 from the local sheep group, and got an OK from the fair board.

The first festival opened in 2000, with a recipe for success that can’t be beat: treat vendors, teachers, students, and other attendees as friends, and make the festival feel like a family reunion. The hardworking efforts of the volunteers has made this the friendliest little fiber festival around. “We may not be the biggest, but we aim to please!”

We would like to thank the following businesses and other groups who have provided monetary and in-kind support to the Northern Michigan Lamb # Wool Festival over the past eight years:

Ogemaw County Fair Board
Michigan Sheep Breeders Association
American Sheep Industry
And many, many thanks to our vendors, those who took a chance and have stuck with us through the years, as well as those who are new each year. We know that the vendors are the heart and soul of any fiber festival, and we appreciate each and every one of you!

Parade Of Nations And Multicultural Festival

Parade of Nations Michigan 2014

Parade Of Nations And Multicultural Festival – The Parade of Nations and Multicultural Festival is the area’s annual Fall celebration of its ethnic and cultural diversity. The event begins with a fun and high-profile parade of over 70 countries featuring traditional cultural dress by parade participants, followed by a daylong festival with a series of events including entertainment, traditional crafts, and over 16 authentic international/ethnic cuisines from many of the nations/cultures represented. The goal of the events is to enable diverse individuals to exhibit a sense of pride in their heritage by sharing it with everyone.

This September is the 25th anniversary of the Parade of Nations, the popular parade and multicultural festival that has become a harbinger of fall in the Copper Country. The theme–fittingly–is Around the World in 25 Years: A Silver Jubilee.

The parade itself and the multicultural festival that follows it in the Dee Stadium are scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 13. But those colorful events–and a dramatic Step Afrika performance that night at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts–are just the finale to a week-long Parade of Nations Silver Jubilee celebration.

On Friday, Sept. 12, at Michigan Tech, Arun Gandhi–the grandson of the legendary Mahatma Gandhi–will discuss the lessons he has learned from his grandfather. The program is free and open to the public.
