Keyword Selection for quality content

Selecting a keyword – Now this is a field that can vary based on your post and what message you are trying to get across, but generally I like to just stick to the event name or the event name plus year.  Basically what you are telling Yoast is what the focus of your post is in the briefest terms possible (for reasons I’ll explain later), and ideally it is what you want people to find your festival or event by typing into Google search or Bing’s search engine.

So why not just select terms for your focus keywords that are highly searched like Florida festivals, as your focus keyword if you have a Florida event.  Well it doesn’t work that way with Google or Bing search engines.  When they crawl the post to see what your post is about, and see that the writing is primarily on say the Florida State Fair and little about Florida festivals in general; you will basically get buried on the 100th page of the search results for the term “Florida festivals”.  So in other words, its not worth your time to focus on a highly searched term if your content isn’t about it because Google will be able to figure out that your focus isn’t on this.

So what if you do a post entirely on Florida festival?  Well, then it is no longer really about your event, so there is not much point to that either.  BUT…

There’s ways to do things legit, that will get you more traffic and new interests in your event that you might not have expected.  Here’s some of our best tips for your posts that can help event a low searched or fairly new event still trying to get established..

  1. Think of all the variations of your event and try to throw those variations into your post.  For example, when we had a submission from the State Fair of Texas which is a large and highly searched event; we included multiple variations.  Terms like Texas State Fair, State Fair of Texas 2015, and 2015 Texas State Fair were mentioned throughout the post.
    The reason for this is because when google crawls your event post, they store the content of the page, the frequency of terms etc.  So when someone types “Texas State Fair” in google, we have a lot higher regard in Google’s search algorithm.
  2. Use a lot of different synonyms to describe your event.  If someone from your area types “awesome festivals in Broward County” in Google search, if you had “awesome” listed somewhere in your post, as well as Broward County, you are now ranking for a completely new keyword, even if this isn’t your keyword focus.  Warning though:  This doesn’t mean you can just get a long running sentence with a string of 20 synonyms in a row.  This is basically a form of what they call “keyword stuffing” and Google has been able to weed this out pretty good for years now.
    But as long as you write naturally flowing paragraphs, you will have no problem filling in your synonyms with the flow of your post.
  3. Follow all the guidelines and suggestions in the SEO Yoast box for Readability and SEO
  4. Link to your post. One of the most reliable ways to rank high for a search term is by links to your posts with the keyword in the link text, variations of the keyword in the link text, shares of your link on Twitter, Google+, and Facebook (though if a profile is private on facebook, google would not crawl the individual’s post, hence these shares wouldn’t increase your search ranking but could still get your post trending in Facebook’s trending section).

Pagina Quatrocento e trentasei – Using a feed widget

People don’t subscribe to feeds unless there is a clear and big Feed button.  This is standard option from jetpack to add with widgets.  The RSS links widget is different than the rss widget.  RSS links widgets lets it known that you have an rss feed, rss feed widget lets you post feed results from other’s blog that link to their post.

Two ways to get found online

Social networking: publicizing posts, email notifications, tweets, etc.

Search engine optimization (SEO): Google is the king, 80% of all searches use Google.

Main ways to get listed higher by google:

  • More sites that link to you the beter
  • Links from better more popular sites more valuable than less popular sites
  • Links from sites that don’t throw out many links are better than sites that list a lot of links

Gettng more Links

Search Engine rankings are most associated with links.  The more people connected to you, the better.  The more reliable and trustworthy your event post, the better.

Getting links from others by looking for sites receptive to your content.  You need to reach out to them and interact with other festival websites.  Offer to guest blog on like-minded festival sites.

Try searching for your festival topic on google Blog search

When a celebrity or well regarded user tweets your event, Google takes note of this.

Write comments on other blogs with either link or reference to your site in the post or post in forums.

Post on other blogs, but don’t spam.  Ask yourself “if this were my site, would i appreciate this comment?”

Research your competitors’ links:  find out who links to your competitors to try to get your links on these sites as well.  To find out who links to a site: Go to google search and type link: to find out all the sites that have links to a particular site.

Using tags: google pays close attention to the tags you add to a post.  If they match a web search keywords, you have a better chance of showing up in search.

When picking tags, pick just a few and make sure they clearly describe your topic and correspond to terms someone might search for.

Optimize your images is a good way to let people find your images in google image searches.  Use alt text, a caption, and descriptions when adding an image.

Adding google fonts – Go to when you see one you like click Pop out to take a closer look and preview it.

Click the Quick use button

Scroll down the page until you find the blue set of tabs saying “Add this code to your website”.  Click the @import tab and copy the @import line and paste it into your style.css file.

Put that right after the @import line of the standard twenty twelve styles or whatever template you’re using.

You can add multiple fonts from google with this @import line, but it is easy to just make a collection of google fonts and import the collection in a single import line.

Create a style that uses the font by setting the font-family property like any normal web-safe font.  But add a true web-safe font as a fallback for old school browsers that can’t display them.

Example of the style.css file code

@import url(;
.entry-header .entry-title {
    font-family: 'Bonbon', 'Times New Roman';
    fontsize: 30px;
