The Southwest Florida Reading Festival is the area’s premier literary event! This free, annual festival incites a passion for reading. The Lee County Library System presents the Festival to emphasize the importance of reading and literacy. The Festival’s allure is the annual line-up of more than 24 nationally acclaimed best-selling authors for all reading interests. The festival has hosted literary celebrities like David Baldacci, Sandra Brown, Erik Larson, Nelson DeMille, James Grippando, Steve Berry, Michael Palmer, Jeffery Deaver, Linda Fairstein, Dennis Lehane, Carl Hiaasen, R.L. Stein, Jeff Kinney and Ridley Pearson to name a few. The festival was recently named a Top 20 Event in the Southeast United States by the Southeast Tourism Society!

The authors give presentations, take questions from the audience and sign books for fans. In addition to the big name authors there are simultaneous programs occurring on nine stages, teen and children’s arts and craft activities, Read the News will be videotaped by WINK TV, every child and teen will receive a new book of their choice, the Reading Rocks! Teen Battle of the Bands finals will take place, the Lee County Teachers of English will award the 2013 Aspiring Author Awards, there will be e-library demonstrations, lots of food vendors and more than 90 Marketplace exhibitors. Thousands of adults, teens and children will celebrate the power of reading and learn about the latest and greatest in books and accessories.

The Southwest Florida Reading Festival
1. Is a free community event presented by the public library system
2. Promotes reading, literacy and library services
3. Takes place in the beautiful Fort Myers River District, Florida (serviced by RSW international airport)
4. Typically draws about 18,000 people
5. Has excellent television, radio and print media support (local CBS affiliate, local public radio, local daily
news, Comcast and Century Link cable, etc.)
6. Features Books-A-Million as our official festival author bookseller
7. Is an award winner: Golden Image Award/Florida Public Relations Assn.; Best Promotional
Campaign/Florida Festivals & Events Assn.

Adult title authors are inside the event center in rooms that seat 200-500 people. Children’s and young adult
authors speak in tented venues in Centennial Park, along the scenic riverfront in downtown Fort Myers.

Authors are contracted for
1. Attendance at An Evening with the Authors reception and dinner Friday, March 20 (no speaking required)
2. One or more presentations
3. One or more autographing sessions
4. All day presence at the festival (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) to include scheduled presentation(s) and signing(s)

Typical presentation format at main event
1. 45-60 minutes for presentation, including time for Q&A
2. Some will be panels of like genre
3. Some may have a moderator or will be set up in an interview style, if desired

Author Accommodations: The Reading Festival will provide
1. Reservations at the host Hotel Indigo in the beautiful River District of Fort Myers. Two nights are covered
by the festival; additional nights at our group rate can be arranged but are at the author’s expense.
2. Ground transportation arrangements to and from: Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW),
the Evening with the Authors dinner and the festival on Saturday.
3. The festival provides dinner on Friday night, and breakfast and lunch at the festival on Saturday.
4. A destination location, making it easy for attendees to bring their families and “stay and play” with them
before or after the festival.

Recap of the March 2014 Reading Festival:

· Hosted a record number of nationally acclaimed authors: 17 adult authors, three teen authors and eight children’s authors for a total of 28 authors
· Overall attendance is estimated at 18,000
· More than 1,800 adults attended author presentations and programs
· More than 1,700 demonstrations of Lee Library System resources occurred
· More than 2,700 children enjoyed authors & programs
· More than 1,400 children took home one free book
· More than 1,400 teens enjoyed authors & programs
· More than 800 teens took home one free book
· Hosted the second Reading Rocks! Teen Battle of the Bands
· More than 250 people volunteered the day of the festival
· Marketplace was full with 93 booths
· More than $20,000 of books were sold by Books-A-Million the day of the festival
· Nearly $10,000 of food was sold the day of the festival
· More than $3,400 of collectible T-shirts were sold with the 2014 festival design

Received rave reviews from attendees with survey results indicating:

· 59 percent were repeat attendees
· 95 percent are likely to attend again
· 97 percent rate the overall event as “Excellent” or “Good”
