For 39 years this event held in Iowa runs seven straight days with ten stages and over 650 performers of America’s greatest acoustic musical art forms. A tipi village set up in an old abandoned ghost town featuring a guitar pull, a fiddler’s jubilee, a Carl Sandburg Reading, a banjo jamboree, an autoharp gathering, a dulcimer do, an accordion and concertina get together, a harmonica howl, a band scramble, a poets corner, the international busking championship, and a songwriters symposium. That’s only one stage. On the main stage expect to see celebrities like John Carter Cash (only child of Johnny & June Carter Cash); LuLu Roman from HeeHaw; Terry Smith (composer of Far Side Banks of Jordan); Smithsonian recording artists Bob & Sheila Everhart; the Harmonicats; David Davis & the Warrior River Boys; Larry Gillis & Swampgrass; Sherwin & Pam Linton, and a slew of performers from around the world all seven days. Expect to enjoy six terrific dance nights in the Dance Hall, including square, round, polka, clog; old-time country and much more. Workshops from 9am to midnight every day in the workshop building featuring every acoustic instrument used in America’s many old-time music genres. A huge arts and crafts fair as well as a flea market on the grounds, even the traveling “Iowa’s Ancient Agriculturalists” tour bus. Terrific food, typical upper Midwest chicken, beef, pork, bbq,all the best. RV electrical camp sites for 350 units, “Jamming” every day, with three hosted jams all week, Contests galore with over $4,000 in prizes and cash. Of the ten stages one is a strictly ‘Gospel” stage with music devoted to Jesus Christ. Inductions into America’s Old Time Music Hall of Fame attract celebrities from around the world, and the Rural Roots Music Commission make their annual “CD’s of the Year” awards to deserving recipients.
