It’s not often that a single person inspires a major event. Renee Flynn, a resident of Bath, Ohio, did just that when she became the driving force behind the Made in Ohio Festival. In January of 2010, Renee approached Hale Farm and Village with a crafty idea. “Hale Farm and Village is the perfect place to hold a festival of products and handcrafts made only in Ohio,” she told them, and Hale Farm and Village agreed. Thus, the Made in Ohio Festival was born. The idea grew out of Renee’s own crafting experience.

“As a crafter myself, I attend a number of craft shows,” says Renee. The Made in Ohio Festival was something I had dreamed about for several years. We have so many awesome resources and artists in Ohio, and I thought a large festival would be a great way to showcase their work,” she says. When asked why she chose Hale Farm and Village, Renee referenced the historical spot’s connection to the crafting world. “Hale Farm is the ideal setting, as their artisans create glass items, pottery and candles right on site,” she says. “They have been a great partner in building this festival.”

A testament to the success of their partnership, this summer’s Second Annual Made in Ohio Festival is Sat 9/3 from 10AM – 5PM @ Hale Farm and Village, 2686 Oak Hill Road in Bath, Ohio. The festival will include over 50 vendors offering a variety of handmade products ranging from jewelry, pottery and glass to carvings, soap and much more.

Supporting local artisans is a great reason for people of all walks of life to head to the Made in Ohio Festival, but it isn’t the only reason. One new attraction Hale Farm and Village has added to this year’s festival is tasty local food. Eats will be provided by local vendors including Ken Stewarts Lodge, Totally Cooked Catering, Vaccaro’s and others. Festival guests will also enjoy live musical entertainment throughout the day. In addition, the price for Made in Ohio is right for the whole family. The $5 per person admission fee includes entry to the craft festival as well as the grounds and buildings at Hale Farm. A regular admission is usually $10, making Sat 9/3 a great day to visit.

“The day will start off early,” says Renee Flynn. “The smell of the food offered by the vendors is enticing and patrons enjoy the festival artisans and the historical buildings on both sides of the street. Once you’ve shopped the festival until you’re ready to drop, you can begin to enjoy all the wonderful things that Hale Farm and Village has to offer.

Have you visited Hale Farm and Village this summer? Nestled in 90 beautiful acres, Hale Farm has been offering a variety of historical, educational programs and exhibits to the public for over 55 years. Some of their most popular programs are their early American trade program and their early American domestic craft programs. Families can observe period craft demonstrations with skilled artisans demonstrating blacksmithing, spinning, weaving, candlemaking and basketmaking. Farm animals are in residence as well with a “stable” of horses, cows and sheep. Hale Farm also presents 1860s Civil War history with more than 32 historical buildings filed with historical furnishings from the early 1800s through the 1890s, and costumed educators who reenact daily life from that period. If you haven’t been there yet this year, the Made in Ohio Festival is the perfect time to visit.
