  • 9/8/20112011 marked the second year of the festival…even bigger than 2010, and growing!

Each year, UAHuntsville–in conjunction with the International Society of Huntsville–present the INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF NORTH ALABAMA.  Campus sponsors include such entities as the Office of International Programs and Services; International Student and Scholar Office; UAHuntsville Library; and the Office of Student Affairs.

It takes place a Saturday in mid-to-late October in the Atrium and open-air Courtyard of the Shelby Center, just off the roundabout at North Loop Road on the UAHuntsville Campus, with easiest access via 301 Sparkman Drive, NW.

Open to the community, the event charges NO entry fee and takes place from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.  This year, Mayor Tommy Battle kicked off the festivities with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.  This was followed by a Chinese Lion Dance and Chinese singing.

As previously, there was a Food Tasting in the Atrium; the cost for the tasting was only $5.00.  This was a bargain by most standards…by the standards of this year’s delish foods, it was a STEAL.  Cabbage rolls, a Moldovan cake, stuffed peppers, jerk chicken…it went on and on.  You’d go through the line and see more stuff had come out since you went through.  What a blast.

There were also numerous onsite vendors selling international foods from various and sundry points on the globe, including Indonesia, Iran, Italy, Nigeria, and China.  Prices here are also at $5 and the vendors are there all day.  I tried the Indonesian, a curry-ish dish that had either beef or a veggie (tofu) option.  I got BOTH, to go, and had them a day or two later.  Spectacular.

There were table displays from over FORTY nations–including Poland, the Caribbean Islands, Pakistan, Australia, Turkey, Guatemala, Egypt, Ukraine, and many other nations that featurec presentations, travel/historic literature, hosts in native apparel, children’s activities (boomerang or kite making, mehndi, and so on), and other visuals.

Performances continued throughout the event and varied from the UAHuntsville Chinese Student and Scholars Association (Dances, Vocal, and Instrument) and Huntsville Chinese Village (Traditional Chinese Ribbon Dance) to the UAHuntsville Latino Studies and Development Club (Mexican Folk Dance), Nomadic Tapestry and Lumani (Middle Eastern Dance), and the Irish Society of North Alabama (The Fitness Arts Fulcrum Irish Step Dancers), and the Huntsville India Association (Bollywood and Classic Indian Dance).

Scheduled musicians helping celebrate THE YEAR OF ALABAMA MUSIC included SlipJig, the popular Celtic Group; Ira Leitner and band (Guitar, Harmonica, Vocals); David Boling, who performed on the Uillean Pipe, or “Irish bagpipe”; and the Four-Star Jazz Orchestra of the Army Materiel Command Band, with a great selection of Latin music.

For enthusiasts of martial arts, engrossing demos by Grupo Unidade Capoeira (Afro-Brazilian Martial Arts, Santista Style) and the North Alabama Korean Association (Taekwondo) rounded out the bill.

Next year should be even greater!  For further information on the Festival, contact Belinda Ong at 824-6432 or ongb@uah.edu.
