Address of Skagit Valley Tulip Festival

In addition, the fiestival map on our website shows locations of all our events and attractions.

You can also pick up a complete Tulip Festival official brochure at these Information Stations:

Tulip Festival Office
Mount Vernon, WA 98273

Cascade Mall
Burlington, Washington

Conway: Conway Foods or Skagit River Produce
18707 Main St., Conway, WA 98273 / 19193 SR 534, Mount Vernon, WA 98274.

I-5 Exit 230 (Highway 20): Skagit’s Own Fish Market or Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites
18042 SR 20, Burlington, WA 98233 / 900 Andis Rd., Burlington, WA 98233.

All official information stations in the valley are also stocked with the festival brochures.

By Car
The tulips are generally grown in a 10+ mile triangle bordered by Hwy 20, the Skagit River, and the Swinomish River Channel. The festival is created as a driving tour as many events and attractions are miles apart, scattered throughout the lower Skagit Valley. Come and see the flowers any time you would like — as long as it is daylight! Weekdays are the least crowded times; weekends can be very busy, so we suggest coming early, use State Route 20 to enter the tulip area, and carpool if possible.

Parking Information
Parking is available at designated lots in the Tulip Field area. There is plenty of parking at Tulip Town and RoozenGaarde and it is FREE. Look for the RoozenGaarde logo for other Official Parking areas. These lots are operated by Washington Bulb Company/RoozenGaarde. Parking in official lots is $5 per car; the ticket you receive from the parking attendant will also admit one person to RoozenGaarde on the same day. Private individuals sometimes operate their own lots — fees paid to private parties will not work for admission to RoozenGaarde.

The two display gardens, RoozenGaarde and Tulip Town, both have free parking adjacent to their facilities.

Roadside parking is limited due to shoulder conditions and traffic safety regulations. Law enforcement officers will issue tickets, so please avoid parking in no parking zones. Our parking plans can sometimes be impacted because of the spring rains when we have to close lots to keep you, our guests, from getting vehicles stuck in the mud.

By Train
Amtrak service runs to Mount Vernon and this can be a very enjoyable way to journey to the festival. Be prepared on arrival to rent a car or engage a taxi to get to the tulip fields as there are no scheduled tours. Monday through Saturday Skagit Transit Route 615 does operate along Mc Lean Rd. If you take this bus, make sure to get on and off at Beaver Marsh Rd. as this is the closest stop to the tulip fields and gardens. You will still be walking a distance to reach your destination.

KeyBank Tulip Ambassadors Promote festival in State Capitol

Our two ambassadors, Chloe Cunningham and Graham Rawson, recently visited Olympia promoting the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. They presented valley legislators and state officials with tulips and posters, impressing all who they met.

Skagit Valley Tulip Festival

The 2 stars are simply for the beauty of the country out there. The vistas are stunning and the flower fields are beautiful.

We decided to drive up today, a sunny April Sunday, from Kirkland. Bad idea. It was a miserable traffic mess. I-5 was rush hour-like traffic for 30 miles before we got off. We took one of the Mt. Vernon exits. What a disaster. We got to a point where both roads that headed towards the road that would take us over the bridge were going absolutely nowhere (we could see the bridge, we just couldn’t get there!). We sat, not moving more than a car length (from a car that turned around) for over an hour. With that amount of traffic, where are the cops and traffic control? It was ridiculous. It got to a point where we realized we were clearly not going anywhere… and bailed.

My husband was ready to chalk it up as a wasted day. I found a rural back road going southbound, and finally hit another main road that would lead towards the fields. The traffic coming the other way (towards the freeway) was stopped for many miles. At this point, it was already past 4pm. Resilient, I kept on. The only problem, we needed a restroom. There wasn’t a single place to stop. I knew turning around wasn’t going to get us anywhere either so we painfully continued to hold it and trucked along.

We came upon a roadside place that had ice cream cones, and from their signs, they also had fruit, veggies and fish. However, the line of people just to get into this place (maybe they had a restroom??) was like Walmart on Black Friday. It was unreal! Clearly, we had to pass and continued.

Several miles later, we found a tulip farm. We also found the police! They were busy ticketing every car parked on the side of the road. What jerks! There were 4 of them going up and down the road, one with a smug grin. They were there just to ticket people looking at the fields. Where were they when this whole area clearly needed police presence and traffic control?

We paid, like most, at a farm lot. Took a few pics and that’s it! There isn’t much to do. You’ve seen one tulip field, you’ve seen them all. I still needed a restroom. Although I generally totally oppose port-o-potties, I got in line. And then a man came out of one and said “well, that was an experience.” I told my family, forget it, we’re out of here!

We went to LaConner and I used a restroom at an Inn. Thank you LaConner channel Lodge!

The sun was going down as we were trying to leave skagit valley. There were still miles long back-ups getting to the freeway. Once we got to the freeway, I-5 south was bumper to bumper traffic at 8-9pm on a Sunday night. We didn’t get home to Kirkland until after 9pm. We left Kirkland at 1:00pm. In total: we had one 45-minute stop for lunch in Marysville, one half-hour to 45min stop at the tulip field, and and another 45 minutes in LaConner to use a restroom and have an ice cream cone. The rest was spent driving.

Prepare yourself if you plan on going. As far a I know, there were no goings-on like a parade or street fair…I cannot even imagine if you go on a weekend like that! Maybe consider staying in town and walking/biking or staying in LaConner.

Skagit Valley Tulip Festival videos

I’ve lived in Seattle for many years and for some reason, never made it to the Tulip Festival. This year, I was prepared. I bookmarked the website, monitored blooms, and tracked weather reports. I also decided ahead of time that I would NOT go during the weekend. Good call.

The fam and I headed up there on a gorgeous Tuesday. That’s right, gorgeous! The sun was shining, temperature moderate, and the blue skies made for perfect pictures.

We stopped in Mount Vernon to check out the town and get the touristy maps and such. Oddly enough, we ended up not using them, but instead decided to drive as far as our gas would take us. Some of the farms charge a moderate fee (typically $5) and offer special events. For this trip, we decided that we wouldn’t pay the money and enjoy the free sights instead. It was our first time and we wanted to do some recon.

Honestly, I had a great experience. I love taking pictures and one of my favorite things to shoot are flowers. I found bright, vibrant colors that were perfect. I found hybrids that I had not seen before, ones that lit up with orange, red, and yellow to remind me of a flame. I saw a Seattle tulip that was brilliant yellow with pointed petals and kissed with a bit of red on the outer petals. Sorcery!

We planned fairly well for the trip. We packed plenty of fluids and snacks. We layered our clothes so we would be prepared for whatever the NW threw at us. We wore boots. Best thing ever! My kid kept jumping in leftover mud puddles from a watering. I simply shrugged. Meh.

Share the road with tractors, don’t pick the tulips, and for goodness sake, do the right thing and offer to take a portrait for someone. Everyone wants pictures with the flowers. 🙂

2014 Skagit Valley Tulip festival videos

Even the grass is beautiful here. Verdant, lush green. Vibrant, crisp. Vivid color dripping from juicy tulips of every hue and variety your imagination could possibly conjure.

Gray skies make for an even more striking color contrast. The flowers seem to be simply lit from within. Stretching from the earth to the sky with otherworldly grace and command. This is hardcore tulip on tulip action at it’s finest – as far as the eye can see.

We went on the second to last day of the festival, a busy Sunday. There were tons of people, I’m sure I made it into a plethora of random family photos. We were discouraged to hear from staff that the flowers were past their prime, but a novice like me couldn’t tell. I was captivated by the cultivation of such stunning beauty. A worthwhile trip from anywhere. Even my husband and brother-in-law were pleased they came.

Cheryl’s Northwest Tours

Cheryl has 7 years experience guiding tours. Noticing a lack of regional tours and very little emphasis on the local history along with the exceptional natural beauty, she decided it was time to share and Cheryl’s Northwest Tours was born.

A native Washingtonian, Cheryl fully embraces the Northwest. It is obvious in the company’s creative regional tours that everyone on the team shares her enthusiasm for Northwest history and local heritage. You’ll notice the difference in their tours as you get a true inside look at the Pacific Northwest.

Cheryl’s Northwest Tours offers Skagit Valley Tulip Festival tours every year. Check out her website for the latest tour information. Their tulip festival tours are usually every Saturday in April featuring the highlights of the festival.

They also offer pickups at local Park and Rides for those of you who live in the Seattle area. If you would like to take the train from downtown Seattle, they offer a pickup option at the Stanwood train station.

From their website – here are the tulip festival tours for 2014:

Mt. Vernon Tulip Fields
Our tour begins in our comfortable 14 passenger mini coach in the small Scandinavian town of Stanwood, Washington. We journey through scenic farmlands and across the Skagit River with Mount Baker as a backdrop. Our first destination will be the tulip fields in Mt. Vernon Washington. Here we will spend time at pre-selected vantage points to help you get the best photo based on the current light and colors of the tulip and daffodil fields.

Roozen Gaarde
We then visit the beautiful flower gardens at Roozen Gaarde, owned by the Roozen family – bulb growers in Holland and the United States since the early 1700s. Growing in their display Garden you will have the opportunity to photograph 90+ tulip varieties in addition to many more varieties of daffodils, hyacinths, crocus, iris, & specialty flowers. Planted just behind the garden is a 15-acre tulip field filled with seemingly endless rows of color. Don’t forget to pick up their free catalog where you can buy over 140 varieties of bulbs. Shutter Tours includes the admission fee to this garden as part of your tour price.

La Conner, Washington
Avoiding the large, mid-day crowds at the gardens we then set out to historic waterfront village of La Conner, Washington. This picturesque town was voted both the “Most Romantic Getaway” and “The best town to capture the Northwest spirit”. Here you will have time to shop at many of the interesting stores including a glass blowing studio, The Woodworking Merchant, and enjoy a meal at one of the many award wining restaurants.

Tulip Town
Tulip Town is a perfect place to stop after lunch with a wonderful indoor display, art gallery and and multi colored fields that explode with colors. The fields planted here have alternating colors about every ten rows to make your afternoon one you will not forget.

Tulip Valley Winery & Ice Cream
Of course a tulip tour is not complete until one has tasted the wine at Tulip Valley Winery. With a nice art gallery and wonderful wines to taste, this stop is sure to be a favorite.
Working our way back through the tulip fields, our last stop is Snowgoose Produce, famous for their “Immodest Ice Cream Cones” along with jams, produce and flowers.

Snow Geese
Along the way we might have the opportunity to stop and see the Snow Geese as they make their way back towards Canada for the summer. This is a sight in itself and we’ll be sure to scout ahead of time to see where the geese might be.

We came opening day of the season this year. Didn’t encounter any traffic, and parking’s free. At $5 per person to get in, it’s a pleasant walk.

If you bring kids, make them wear goloshes or boots. It’s MUDDY and you’ve got other little ones jumping around in puddles, getting all the others riled up, and wanting to do nothing more than splash about, kicking dirt and brown water everywhere. Oh, to be young again and have the only thing to cry about being that Mommy wouldn’t let you get any more dirty than you already were. My 2-year-old niece would see another puddle and veer off to run through it and get so upset when we’d try to direct her away.

Anyway, yeah, lots of flowers. Rows upon rows of vibrant blossoms in the field. They make for pretty pictures, especially with the barns and kites in the background. There are rules against entering the walking into the rows. You’ll still see people entering them for pictures, anyway. Oh well.

One thing that was sort of odd was the fact that my sister-in-law and niece kept getting approached for pictures by strangers. Older men were following them throughout the fields waiting to proposition Sara for a picture with her daughter in front of the tulips. It was starting to get creepy when two different guys asked for pictures in different places around the fairgrounds, and no, Sara and her daughter weren’t wearing costumes or anything of the like. This is out of the festival’s control, so I’m not faulting them for it.

Other displays at the festival included windmills, miniature Dutch villages, and vases of tulips. This one cottage had a Mexican flag flying on the pole beside it with a sign reading it’s to represent their gratitude toward the “Hispanic Crew” who maintain the fields.

While I’m not that into flowers (or paying to look at them, for that matter), it was a worthwhile walk with the family.

Skagit Valley Tulip Festival LODGING

We know what it’s like when you’re looking for lodging accommodations and you’re just not sure where to stay during the tulip festival– especially if you’re planning a getaway to a new destination community like La Conner. We’re extremely proud of our lodging establishments – they are absolute experts at making your stay extra special. They know that when you find the time to take a trip, you want to be well taken care of during your visit, and they’ll make sure that happens. From quaint Bed & Breakfast Inns and Lodging, to our historically significant hotel, our condos and our rental homes, we have a wide variety of lodging options to choose from in the heart of the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival.

Skagit Valley Tulip Festival SHOPPING

There’s a reason why La Conner is one of Washington State’s most-loved getaways … and much of it has to do with our retail corridor on both Morris and First Streets. You’ll find an amazing array of specialty shops … most of which have a long list of regular customers who come back again and again to see what’s new, to indulge themselves a little, or to buy gifts for their families and friends. From fine art to fine arts and crafts, one-of-a-kind clothing, woodworking, home décor, collectibles personal care products, stunning antiques, gorgeous jewelry and Italian pottery, our shopkeepers work hard to bring you items that you’ll not find in any mall, or any big-box store…..and of course…plenty of official Skagit Valley Tulip Festival gifts and freshly cut tulips.

Skagit Valley Tulip Festival FOOD & DRINK

You probably know that La Conner is a wonderful community to visit – and you may know that our shopping opportunities and museums are top-notch. But … did you know that in La Conner you can get a fabulous meal that rivals what you’d find in the city? Our restaurants serve the freshest of local ingredients – from seafood to produce to organic meats, cheeses and breads – turning what could be a good meal into a great meal! Whether you’re looking for a hearty breakfast, a delicious pastry and latte, lunch for the family or a romantic dinner for two during the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival, you’ll find wonderful options in La Conner.

Skagit Valley Tulip Festival ART, HISTORY & CULTURE

It goes without saying that La Conner is a historically significant town in Washington State history – our land has been inhabited by several Native American tribes for thousands of years and the town of La Conner was established in the mid-1800’s. Many of our buildings and residential homes are original; having been lovingly restored over the years, today they are often photographed by Skagit Valley Tulip Festival visitors who love their charm and appeal. We’re also well-respected as an artistically significant town as well; in the mid-1930’s Morris Graves and Guy Anderson first established themselves as artists-in-residence, to be joined later by artists such as Richard Gilkey, and Barbara and Clayton James. We’re home to three significant museums and their ongoing exhibits – The Museum of Northwest Art (MoNA), The La Conner Quilt and Textile Museum, and the Skagit County Historical Museum. The La Conner Institute of Performing arts brings in amazing musicians every year, and the Swinomish people are experiencing a revitalization of the cultural traditions, exemplified by the Cedar Hat Pavilions across the channel. Be sure to plan on visiting the museums during the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival.

Are we allowed to walk through the fields rather than just drive by them?

You can walk through the display gardens at Tulip Town and Roozengaarde but not in the fields themselves.

The tulips always depend on the weather, so predicting the best time can sometimes be difficult. Usually the second or third week of April is a great time to visit, the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival runs the entire month of April.

Hi I’m interested in attending the Tulip Festival in 2015, yet I don’t see anything on-line with details about this event. I understand it occurs during the entire month of April, but do you have any information (website??) regarding the events planned for 2015? With 5 months to go it would be nice to begin preparations.

The Official Skagit Valley Tulip Festival runs the entire month of April – but mother nature dictates when the tulips will actually bloom… In La Conner the Annual Tulip Frolic & Parade will take place Saturday April 11th.
The Tulip Festival website is: http://www.tulipfestival.org
We will start posting information and links to the http://www.lovelaconner.com website in February.

Thanks!

Hi, I was looking forward to visiting the festival this year to see the tulips, I know it ends the end of April but I’m hearing some of the flowers might be cut soon, what days would you recommend also factoring the weather?

The sooner the better, it seems the peak of bloom was last week.
There are still plenty of fields to see as well as display gardens.

We are planning to visit over May 2-4th. Would the flowers still be in bloom at that time?
Love La Conner:

There is a very good chance that most of the fields will be cut by then, there still may be blooms at the display gardens at Tulip Town.
Please keep an eye on the “bloom map” to keep track of the fields:

There aren’t any specific bus routes to the tulip fields – Skagit Transit runs through Mount Vernon and La Conner. Please check out the attached link; there are some tours of the fields that you may be able to connect with:

History of the Skagit Tulip Festival

The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival was officially inaugurated in 1984 by the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce. Chamber directors Jerry Diggerness and Joan Houchen saw that people were coming by the thousands to view the tulips and, through a retreat, decided to add events and festivities to enhance the visitors’ trip to the Skagit Valley. In 1994 the Tulip Festival broke off from the Chamber of Commerce and became an entity of its own.

From humble beginnings, the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival grew. It moved from 3 days to 10, then 17 and now, for the past 5+ years, to 30 days. The expansion to 30 days was to ensure that the huge fields of tulips grown in Skagit Valley would actually bloom sometime during the festival, since a shorter festival sometime missed the blooming of the fields.

Today the festival boasts an amazing assortment of events — art shows, gala celebrations, concerts, tours of local shellfish and cheese operations and an open house at PACCAR. Two signature events have grown along with the festival –the Downtown Mount Vernon Street Fair and the Kiwanis Salmon Barbecue – fundraisers for both organizations that have proven highly successful. There are lots of physical activities associated with the festival as well – a run, 20- 40- and 60-mile bike rides, and a youth basketball tournament.
Lynette:
We are planning to visit the tulip fields this Saturday. I understand that there can be a lot of traffic getting to and from the fields. is it possible to ride our bikes and are there bike paths along the fields? thank you.
Love La Conner:
The tulip fields are very bike friendly, there aren’t any official bike paths but many bicyclists ride through the area. You could park in La Conner and bike!
we have Skagit Cnty bike maps at our visitor center – 511 Morris St.
delshannon:
Do you think we are allowed to bring your tulip bulbs back Canada? I plan to buy some during my visit there. Thanks!
Love La Conner Cook:
The only information that I can find is that cut flowers may be inspected. Bulbs not allowed.

I’m thinking of flying my father out to see the tulips but he wouldn’t be able to come until April 26th. Do you think some tulips would still be in bloom? And would it still be worth a plane ticket?
Thanks so much!!!
Love La Conner:
April 14, 2014 at 2:09 pm
Because the weather warmed up last week, the tulips are at peak bloom this week. I assume some fields will be cut by the 26th.
There will still be tulip festival activities and the show fields to view. You can see a bloom map on our website:

Love La Conner:
April 7, 2014 at 2:35 pm
I believe that if the weather is nice it will be hard to avoid traffic but there are 3 ways to get to the tulips:
Conway (Exit 221) head West on the Conway-Fir Island Rd, follow the tulip route signs
Mount Vernon at Kincaid St (exit 226), take Hwy 536, follow tulip route signs
Anacortes Exit to Hwy 20 (exit 230), follow tulip route signs
Enjoy your trip to the Skagit Valley!

You have to go here in the springtime!

If you’re looking for a little bit of a drive to see something spectacular, jump in the car and head up to the Skagit Valley tulip festival. I drove all the way from Lacey up to Mount Vernon to catch a glimpse of the wonderful tulips. I’ve never seen so many tulips in one place (except in Holland, MI). And there are so many wonderful colors and combinations of colors. You are guaranteed to take at least 100 photos and it’s a perfect place to take your wedding photos or maybe your invitation card photos.

Since it took a while for me to get up to Mt. Vernon, I only got to see the tulips at Roozengaarde and didn’t get a chance to go to Tulip Town.

Roozengaarde is actually open all but three days of the year, so if you can’t make it to the tulip festival, you can still buy tulips and garden supplies year round. Roozengaarde is available online and ships flowers all over the world. yelp.com/biz/roozengaard…

Honestly, just seeing Roozengaarde was good enough for me. The entrance fee was only $5 with free parking. I KNOWWWWW! Only $5 per person. It’s a really cheap way to enjoy nature and get some wonderful photos. It’s 1000 acres of blooms and then there is the 3 acres Show Garden across the street. The show garden displays a lot more of the specialty tulips and different varieties. They also have the Roozengaarde store and a big set up for the purchase of food and beverages, just in case you have the munchies while you’re scouting the grounds.

The $5 entrance fee also gets you entrance to the Show Garden as previously mentioned and a separate part of Roozengaarde that is just a short drive down the road from the main garden. I mentioned that the parking is free. There are some guys that will ask from money for you to park inside the gates, but you can just park on the street for free and it’s really not that far to walk. You’ll see what I’m talking about when you get there.

I would definitely go again, because it’s just so dang pretty. Check out all the photos, get some ideas, bring your kids, spend a little money and head on home with content.

  • Skagit Valley Tulip Festival - Mount Vernon, WA, United States
  • Skagit Valley Tulip Festival - Mount Vernon, WA, United States

Skagit Valley farms more tulips in the world than anywhere else, including Holland! That will put in your mind how big the farms are here! Skip the farms that charge admission and go drive around to the farms that are free to view. Every tulip color you can think of, along with daffodils, will be aplenty.

There will be tulips as tall as your waist in some areas!

Bring cash if you want to buy flowers. Tulips like it really cold so store them in your car with the A/C cranked on till you can put them in water. Tulips and daffodils will kill each other off, so don’t place them in the same vase.

Stay away from driving on a weekend if you can. Traffic can be brutal. Dogs aren’t allowed. Wear your mud boots and bring your camera! Be careful where you park because the traffic cops will be out like crazy.

Skagit Valley history and info

Festival
The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival is one of the destination events for the Pacific Northwest, held from April 1-30. Every spring hundreds of thousands of people come to enjoy the celebration of spring as millions of tulips burst into bloom. As with all things governed by Mother Nature, the tulips bloom according to their own schedule sometime during the festival. The tulips allow us to share our corner of the world and showcase Skagit Valley agriculture. We depend on a strong volunteer base to keep our office up and running and to put on our festival activities. This year Skagit Valley Senior Village has stepped up to sponsor our Volunteer program which logged nearly 1,400 hours in 2014.

Our festival is designed as a driving tour for the visitor as there is no one “site” that you go to for your visit. The fields of tulips are scattered throughout the Skagit Valley as are the many events and activities that comprise the festival. The tulip fields are the crops of RoozenGaarde/Washington Bulb Co., Inc. and Tulip Town and the fields are different each year due to crop rotation. Both RoozenGaarde and Tulip Town also have displays of tulips in gardens for visitors to view and photograph. We hope you enjoy taking in one of the many events and activities that happen only during April.

As the festival continues on its journey – now for 32 years – we welcome people from across the United States and from around the world. The beauty of the flowers truly transcends differences, bringing cultures, ages and diverse lifestyles together to marvel at nature’s creation. In 2014 we were proud to greet visitors from all 50 states and from 85 foreign countries.

We hope you enjoy our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/SkagitValleyTulipFestival) and add your own favorite photos there. We continue to refine our brochure to give our fans the printed information they need to fully enjoy their trip to Skagit Valley. If you want a printed version rather than an electronic copy, click on the brochure tab and enter the appropriate information.

Thank you for visiting. We hope you enjoy your stay.
History
The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival was officially inaugurated in 1984 by the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce. Chamber directors Jerry Diggerness and Joan Houchen saw that people were coming by the thousands to view the tulips and, through a retreat, decided to add events and festivities to enhance the visitors’ trip to the Skagit Valley. In 1994 the Tulip Festival became a nonprofit corporation governed by a board of directors. I 2002 it completed the separation from the Chamber, moving to its own offices.

Staff
The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival has a year-round staff who work to make sure the festival is a success each year. The festival office is in downtown Mount Vernon, WA at 311 W Kincaid Street. It is open all 30 days of April from 9 am to 5 pm. The rest of the year (May thru March) we work to have the office staffed Monday thru Friday, 10 am to 4 pm, except for Federal holidays; you will often find us here at other hours as well. Besides obtaining information you can purchase Official Merchandise items at the office, including t-shirts, mugs, magnets, posters and coasters.

Sponsors
Businesses and groups large and small support the festival through sponsorships ranging from $275 to $5500. These sponsorship dollars are vital to the successful operation of the festival. Please take the time to look over these businesses and drop by for a visit when you come here to the festival. If you are interested in sponsoring the festival, please give Sponsorship Coordinator David Johnson a call at 360-428-5959.

Poster Artists
Each year tulip fans are treated to a new Skagit Valley Tulip Festival poster — always different from the last — with a fresh rendition of what the tulips are all about. Some are pastoral scenes, others feature cats and birds, and some have featured children along with the flowers. No matter what, the poster art says “Skagit Valley.”

Designers
Showcasing the grace and beauty of the tulip — the star of the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival — is a challenge that artists, graphic designers and webmasters find daunting each year. Yet they accomplish their goal, creating products for our hundreds of thousands of tulip fans to use.

Board of Directors
An all volunteer Board of Directors governs the nonprofit corporation that makes the Tulip Festival become a reality each spring. The Executive Board is made up of a president, vice-president, treasurer, secretary and immediate past president. There are eight board members serving rotating three-year terms. In addition the board has created two permanent positions for the valley’s tulip growers and three advisory positions to help with official merchandise, legal matters and insurance concerns.

Our mission is to support lifelong literacy and cultural diversity through the writing, reading, performing, and teaching of poetry in Northwest Washington schools and communities.

Welcome to the Skagit River Poetry Foundation
Imagine: It is May in La Conner, Washington. Downtown streets are filled with high school students chattering, comparing notes, and deciding whom to see next. They are not talking about last week’s date or ball game; they are discussing poetry. And why not? Since September, their teachers and their Skagit River Poetry Foundation resident poets have prepared them for this day.

U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins uses the scoreboard in the La Conner High School gym to create an impromptu haiku and in the intimate upstairs mezzanine of the Next Chapter Bookstore he discusses poetry with area high school seniors. Jimmy Santiago Baca, National Hispanic Heritage Award winning poet and HBO scriptwriter, tells stories of dead bodies in car trunks and his experiences with inmates in Southwest prisons. Ekiwah Adler-Belendez, an eighteen-year-old Mexican-born poet with cerebral palsy, agrees to sing one of his poems if a Mount Vernon High School musician/poet will accompany him.

This is magic, this poetry we hear and make in our Poets in the Schools program and at the biennial Skagit River Poetry Festival. The organization’s board, made up of school and community volunteers, has honed activities that infuse diverse voices into area classrooms from September through May. We bring poetic voices to our rural community that reflect diverse multi-ethnic and multi-generational populations, viewpoints, and history.

The Skagit River Poetry Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, took root in 1998, the result of a conversation between leaders from seven rural school districts in Skagit County, Washington. These leaders hoped to create a project that would support our high literacy standards with the arts; poetry was the natural vehicle. From 1998 to the present, more than 50 Skagit County teachers a year have hosted resident poets. More than 400,000 students have had the experience of playing with words while reading and writing poetry one-on-one with experts. Our professional poets have modeled instructional strategies for teachers and prepared a bank of poetry lessons.

The culminating event for this in-class work is the biennial Skagit River Poetry Festival, which started in 2000 and is held every other May. Dates for the next festival are May 15-18.
