History
The first Azalea Festival was held in 1948 with Hugh Morton serving as President. The following is a letter written by Mr. Morton to Gayle Ward in response to her request for information about the Festival beginnings:

Dear Gayle:

Dr. W. Houston Moore, M.D., a wonderful old gentleman who lived in the 1800 block of Market Street, had been active through the Rotary Club in beautifying Greenfield Park with azaleas, dogwoods, and other flowering plants. In 1947 he decided to invite all of the leading civic clubs in Wilmington to send a representative to a meeting at the Chamber of Commerce in its building behind City Hall to discuss the feasibility of holding an Azalea Festival that would celebrate the beauty of Greenfield, Orton, Airlie and other gardens around town. I was sent by the Wilmington Jaycees as their representative to that first meeting.

There are probably minutes somewhere that list all of those who attended that first gathering. I can recall Henry Rehder, Wallace Murchison, Kenneth Sprunt, Star-News Editor John Hope and Paul T. Marshburn as being among ones who were particularly supportive of Dr. Moore’s idea.

I had a business trip that caused me to miss the second meeting of the somewhat informal Committee, but upon returning to town I was advised that I had been elected-selected President of the first Azalea Festival. I did my level best to talk my way out of that, but Dr. Moore was a persuasive and determined guy, and there were promises of support from all around the room from others on the Committee.

When the first Azalea Festival took place in April 1948 the gardens were at peak beauty, the weather was perfect, and the Festival cleared $5,000, a profit we knew we had to have or we would never see the second Festival. Our first, and absolutely Ideal Queen was Jacqueline White of RKO Radio Pictures. The top other celebrities were Ted Malone, who originated his coast-to-coast ABC Radio Network program from a platform in front of the Community Center on Second Street, and NC Governor R. Gregg Cherry, who crowned the Queen at Lumina Ballroom on Wrightsville Beach. The community was saddened when Dr. Moore died during the summer following the 1948 Festival, but the whole town was pleased to believe he died happy that the first Azalea Festival was a rousing success.

Best regards,

Hugh Morton

Nug Yug India festival

Nuv Yug India Fest

Greetings, welcome to Nuv Yug India Fest website.

After successfully producing Indian cultural arts festivals in North Carolina for over a decade, we embark upon a journey to assist communities in other major cities to start similar festivals based on our processes and system.

Nug Yug India festival
Nug Yug India festival

Our success in Raleigh is built on strong relationships with local area teachers, who take pride in bringing their dance students to our state-of-the-art platform – to encourage and instill a lifetime of learning of diverse cultural arts from the Indian subcontinent.

The state-of-the-art platform, Nuv Yug utilizes, consists of automated registration, audition judging, performance scheduling, and stage management functions. It helps produce a program consisting of over 1,500 performers during two days of a festival.

Raleigh area residents have enjoyed a top notch family oriented Indian cultural arts festival for over a decade. For the first time, other major cities are poised to witness a similar festival based on the same platform. A team of local community members is working with Nuv Yug to build a grass roots movement to support the festival in selected cities. Select a location to view specific information for each city.

If you are interested in participating, please register from the Dashboard page. If you are interested in joining our local team, please send us a message from the Contact page.

Join us to witness an exquisite exposition of Indian Cultural Arts at the Nuv Yug India Fest on Sat-Sun March 14-15 at the Park Expo and Conference Center in Charlotte.

During the weekend, traditional crafts vendors from New York, Chicago and Florida in addition to many local vendors will showcase unbelievable crafts from India. And, area’s top restaurants will offer famous Indian delicacies to visitors. As well as performers will present dances from across India.

Shakori Hills Music festival

Shakori Hills Music festival 2014

Shakori Hills Music festival and grassroots Dance fest – The Fall Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival will feature more than 50 bands and performers on two big outdoor stages, a large Dance Tent, and an intimate Cabaret Tent. Located on 72 beautiful farmland acres at 1439 Henderson Tanyard Road in Silk Hope, North Carolina, just down the road from Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Durham, Burlington, and Greensboro. The festival also features local crafts, delicious food, various children’s activities, healing arts practitioners, dancing and music workshops, environmental sustainability forums, and much more in a family-friendly setting

The Shakori Hills Music festival is listed as one of our top 150 music festivals!

He never came to Shakori Hills, but we think Pete Seeger would have loved it here! He would have wandered the wooded paths, his banjo slung over his back, in search of camp jams and folks to have conversations with, swapped tales and songs by the fire. He would have played games with the children, taught them “This Land is Your Land” or “This Old Man.” He might have two-stepped in the Dance Tent, or joined the Rowdy Square Dance. He surely would have sat down at the sustainability fair or one of the advocacy booths and had a heated debate about fracking in NC. And he would have played an inspiring set on one of our stages, filling the hills with the songs lifted not only by his voice, but by all of our voices. “Participation,” Pete said, “that’s what’s gonna save the human race!”

The Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance
Fall Festival: October 9-12, 2014
A music lovers’ paradise, Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival is a family-friendly celebration of music, dance, art, & education. 4 days, 4 stages, & over 60 bands in beautiful, green Chatham County!
Tickets for the Fall Festival will be available beginning June 21st. Please visit our Tickets & Info Page to find out more or purchase tickets.

Participation in sit-ins and protests against injustice is important, but so is the participation in teaching a child a song, or a teenager to build something with her own hands. Participation in the good things in life is just as important as participation in what we believe in and what we think is right for our fellow human beings – or aren’t they the same thing?

One thing we love most here at the festival is that everyone who enters the gate is encouraged not only to absorb the festival, to get something good out of it, but also, to participate in it. Folks have just as much to offer the festival as the festival has to offer them. Once it begins, it becomes a living thing, bouncing from woman to man to child, sharing their smiles, their movements, their good energy, and becoming a whole.

Seeger thought that a song could change the world. He thought that music could take individuals and turn them into a whole, a human race working together to improve our existence. Perhaps a festival could do the same…come, this spring, and participate with us!

Elkin Trails Boogie Festival 2014

Elkin Trails Boogie festival 2014 in NC

Elkin Trails Boogie Festival

Elkin Valley Trails Associations annual fund raiser at The Liberty in Elkin. Located in historical downtown Elkin at 222 E Main Street, you’ll have a free night of fantastic music by The Jeweltones, eat great BBQ and dance the night away!

Elkin, North Carolina is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. We are centrally located between Mount Airy and Charlotte, Boone and Winston-Salem, along Interstate-77, only 20 minutes away from the Blue Ridge Parkway and Stone Mountain State Park. Our quaint historical downtown is situated along the Yadkin River with shopping and restaurants.
Nearby, Elkin Municipal Park has a community center with 8 tennis courts and a pool, walking trails along Big Elkin Creek, a children’s playground, a softball field, and basket ball courts. Residents and visitors alike enjoy beautiful Cedarbrook Country Club golf course nearby for a leisurely game of golf. Hiking and biking trails are scattered throughout town and paddlers enjoy docking and camping in Elkin at Crater Park, downtown.

Elkin is a town in Surry and Wilkes counties in the U.S. state of North Carolina, along the Yadkin River. Elkin shares its name with the surrounding township of Elkin Township. The population was 4,001 at the 2010 census

Elkin Trails Boogie festival 2014 in NC
Elkin Trails Boogie festival 2014 in North Carolina

Elkin has 6 wineries within our town along with dozens more in the Yadkin Valley Wine Region. Have you heard our saying, “20 tasting rooms within 20 miles”?…well it’s true and that number grows every day! Elkin has the #1 rated Fairfield Inn in the region, and lots of cozy cabin rentals minutes from downtown, numerous spas, gorgeous venues for weddings, and annual events that bring our downtown alive (Cruise events, Tour de Yadkin, Fiddlers by the River, Yadkin Valley Wine Festival in the spring and the Yadkin Valley Pumpkin Festival in the fall ). We’ve been the starting point and host city for Cycle North Carolina “Mountains to the Coast”, which brings over 900 cyclists to Elkin for the weekend and we are a newly designated trail town for the NC Mountain to Sea Trial. We also offer Civil War and Revolutionary War markers and section of The Overmountain Victory Trail runs through town.
Elkin has a municipal airport with ground transportation available, only minutes away from downtown.

Elkin had the biggest cruising community on the east coast during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. USA Today once featured Elkin and its cruisers on the front page of the national news paper. However, a crackdown by local police in the late 1990s completely wiped out the once-vibrant weekend cruising scene leaving downtown Elkin deserted on weekend nights.

On Saturday, October 10, 2009, cruising life returned to downtown Elkin for the first time in almost 20 years. A fundraiser was held to raise money to restore the historic Reeves Theater in downtown Elkin. For a $5 donation, participants would be given a decal for their car and then be allowed cruise the former downtown cruising loop. Many people both young and old participated, with many parents who were cruisers in their younger days bringing their children out to show them how fun downtown Elkin used to be.
In 2012, Cruise! events became a summertime monthly event and continue each year. Cruise events involve parking along Main Street as well as cruising around the downtown streets. Events are scheduled May through August each year. Many shops and restaurants stay open for the crowds. The event starts around 3 pm and lasts till around 9 pm. For information and other events downtown, go to www.downtownelkin.com.

Experience Elkin!
The Town of Elkin was recently honored as the 2013 “Great Place in the Making” for our historical downtown’s new designation of Trail Town and its bustling hub of entertainment venues, along with its resurgence of businesses and potential heritage trails center in the Main Street district. Many plans are in the making… stay tuned for more updates!
