For 39 years this event held in Iowa runs seven straight days with ten stages and over 650 performers of America’s greatest acoustic musical art forms. A tipi village set up in an old abandoned ghost town featuring a guitar pull, a fiddler’s jubilee, a Carl Sandburg Reading, a banjo jamboree, an autoharp gathering, a dulcimer do, an accordion and concertina get together, a harmonica howl, a band scramble, a poets corner, the international busking championship, and a songwriters symposium. That’s only one stage. On the main stage expect to see celebrities like John Carter Cash (only child of Johnny & June Carter Cash); LuLu Roman from HeeHaw; Terry Smith (composer of Far Side Banks of Jordan); Smithsonian recording artists Bob & Sheila Everhart; the Harmonicats; David Davis & the Warrior River Boys; Larry Gillis & Swampgrass; Sherwin & Pam Linton, and a slew of performers from around the world all seven days. Expect to enjoy six terrific dance nights in the Dance Hall, including square, round, polka, clog; old-time country and much more. Workshops from 9am to midnight every day in the workshop building featuring every acoustic instrument used in America’s many old-time music genres. A huge arts and crafts fair as well as a flea market on the grounds, even the traveling “Iowa’s Ancient Agriculturalists” tour bus. Terrific food, typical upper Midwest chicken, beef, pork, bbq,all the best. RV electrical camp sites for 350 units, “Jamming” every day, with three hosted jams all week, Contests galore with over $4,000 in prizes and cash. Of the ten stages one is a strictly ‘Gospel” stage with music devoted to Jesus Christ. Inductions into America’s Old Time Music Hall of Fame attract celebrities from around the world, and the Rural Roots Music Commission make their annual “CD’s of the Year” awards to deserving recipients.

On the main stage expect to see celebrities like John Carter Cash (only child of Johnny and June Carter Cash); LuLu Roman from HeeHaw; Terry Smith (composer of Far Side Banks of Jordan); Smithsonian recording artists Bob and Sheila Everhart; the Harmonicats; David Davis and the Warrior River Boys; Larry Gillis and Swampgrass; Sherwin and Pam Linton, and a slew of performers from around the world all seven days.

History of the Iowa State Fair and Fairgrounds:

Major building and exhibit facilities, plenty of free parking and a full-time planning staff make the historic Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines a complete year-round meeting and exposition center.

Choose from more than a dozen facilities including the modern Jacobson Exhibition Center (opened in 2010), the colossal Varied Industries Building, the midsize Elwell Family Food Center, the huge 4-H Exhibits Building and mammoth Cattle Barn. People have even rented the parking lots to stage circuses, barbeque contests, swap meets and car shows. Nearly 200 events are held on the grounds annually.

Additional features include free parking, a 160-acre campgrounds outdoor stages, picnic shelters, indoor/outdoor show rings, horseshoe courts and an outstanding half-mile dirt track.

Whether you’re planning a simple event or an elaborate experience, the Fairgrounds staff will help you arrange for caterers and decorators, sound equipment and lights, tables and chairs, forage and hay, dozers and forklifts, plumbers and electricians, plus hauling and clean-up service. Internet access is available anywhere on the grounds (price depends on location; advance notice required). A professional printing and sign shop is on-site. The 24-hour Fair Patrol is available for special security requests.

The Iowa State Fairgrounds are located in Iowa’s capital off I80 and I35 only minutes from downtown and 20 minutes from the Des Moines International Airport. Des Moines is easy to reach via major airlines and boasts a per diem rate that is consistently about 20 percent less than the national average. Tradeshow Week named Des Moines the most affordable city to host a trade show. The city also features upscale shopping areas, fine restaurants and excellent hotels and motels.

Fairgrounds facilities and services — as much or as little as you need — are available at surprisingly low cost. Requirements are simple: a signed contract and a certificate of insurance. Start planning your Fairgrounds event today.

The Butter Cow:

J.K. Daniels sculpted the festivals first butter cow  and over the years this has turned into much more.  Now the Butter Cow starts with a wood, metal, wire and steel mesh frame and about 600 lbs. of low moisture, pure cream Iowa butter.

Fun fact: a butter cow weighing over 600 lbs. would butter 19,200 slices of toast and take an average person two lifetimes to consume.   In addition to the Butter Cow, a companion sculpture also graces the Agriculture Building coolers. Following are some that have been on display in previous years:

More history of the Festival:

The first Iowa State Fair was in Fairfield October 25 to 27, 1854, with a budget of $323.The Fair was held again in Fairfield in 1855, but for the next several years, the Fair moved from town to town, remaining mostly in eastern Iowa.
The Fair was held in Muscatine in 1856-1857, Oskaloosa in 1858-1859, Iowa City in 1860-1861, Dubuque in 1862-1863, Burlington in 1864-1866, Clinton in 1867-1868, Keokuk in 1869-1870 and 1874–1875, and Cedar Rapids in 1871-1873 and 1876-1878. The Fair moved permanently within the Des Moines city limits in 1878. After the Iowa State Legislature and the City of Des Moines appropriated funds for the Fair in 1886, it moved to its current location at East 30th and East Grand in Des Moines.[2]
Since 1854, the Iowa State Fair has been entertaining Iowans on a yearly basis with only a few exceptions. In 1898, the Fair was cancelled due to the celebration of the World’s Fair in nearby Omaha, Nebraska, as well as the prolonged Spanish-American War. The Fair was also closed in 1942 due to World War II when the state allowed military personnel to use the grounds as a supply depot. The Fair re-opened in 1946.[1]
The Fair celebrated its sesquicentennial in 2004. Also in 2004, the Fair set an attendance record with 1,053,978 visitors, a record that was broken during the 2008 Fair which reported 1,109,150 fairgoers.[1] Conservative figures indicate the 11-day Fair as the catalyst for approximately $60 million worth of spending in travel, lodging, restaurants, shopping, etc.
