The Arcadia All Florida Championship Rodeo began back in the 1920s while the American Legion hoped to raise money to pay for a new building.  A businessman who was a member of the American Legion asked a rancher named Zeb Parker if a rodeo could raise money.  Zeb agreed it could be done and offered to furnish the stock free of charge.

In preparation for the Arcadia All Florida Championship Rodeo, special arrangements were made to bring in a group of Seminole Indians.  The American Legion and the Lion’s Club volunteered to sponsor a parade.  Two thousand Shriners were expected to march in the parade.  The Governor of Florida, Doyle E. Carlton, notified officials he would be attending the rodeo and the Wauchula band provided the music.  The first Arcadia All Florida Championship Rodeo was such a success that the American Legion was able to pay off the mortgage on the new building in four years .

During the early thirties (even though the local economy was devastated by the national depression) the Arcadia All Florida Championship Rodeo continued as people struggled to simply earn enough to afford the necessities of life.  During these years the rodeos were held in the Limestone Community of Desoto County, where the interest in rodeo was kept alive.

In 1938 at the urgings of his son (Billy Welles) and a friend (Gerald Taylor- a local rancher and businessman), Ed Welles agreed to promote and finance the rodeo.  The Arcadia rodeo became an annual event at the Welles’ arena until the sudden death of Ed Welles on June 11,1950.  However, the tradition of rodeo was so firmly entrenched in the hearts of so many Desoto Countians that on January 10, 1952, at a meeting of the Rotary Club, what would become the Arcadia All Florida Championship Rodeo, Inc. as we know it today was reactivated .

The rodeo continued at the Welles’ arena until 1959 when the arena was moved to its present location.  In 1973 the Arcadia All-Florida Championship Rodeo, Inc. joined the ranks of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA).

Florida State Fair celebration Genre

The year was 1904. The American flag had 45 stars, Theodore Roosevelt was president and the average American earned just 22 cents an hour. That year, what would be later known as the Florida State Fair opened its gates in Tampa. Since then, there has been incredible inventions, wars, social change and musical styles that have rocked each generation. Still, the Florida State Fair remains a showcase of the best the state has to offer.

Get ready to gorge on fried food and spin ’til you’re dizzy, because The Florida State Fair returns to Tampa for its 110th year, Feb. 6 through 17 at the Florida State Fairgrounds.

Advance tickets went on sale today at Walgreens stores throughout Florida and AAA locations around the Tampa Bay Area. Tickets are also available at the box office at the Florida State Fairgrounds, by calling 1-800-345-3247, or on the official fair website.

The fair’s theme for 2015 is “1st Place for Fun,” playing on the late-winter fair’s status as the earliest state fair of the year in the U.S., a news release from the fair’s organizers said.

Among the attractions at the fair will be the “largest traveling roller coaster in North America,” “bizarre sideshow spectacles” including sword swallowing and fire eating, the FMX Motorcycle Thrill Zone and more than 110 free things to do after paid admission, the release said.

Musical performers include America, Country Gold, Sister Hazel and Uncle Kracker. Tickets for Country Gold’s concerts Feb. 12 at noon and 4 p.m. require purchase of a reserved-seating ticket. Other concerts are included with admission.

There will also be the usual mix of indulgent fair food, livestock, and the rustic Cracker Country, which uses actors and authentic buildings and tools to recreate Florida life in the late 19th century.

Advance pricing for admission is $7 for seniors (select senior days only), $9 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 11. Children aged 5 and under are free. Ride armbands are $25 in advance.

Sue Monk Kidd talks about her New York Times Bestseller at the …
BY NANCY STETSON
nstetson@floridaweekly.com
THE DISCOVERY OF THE TWO SOUTHERN SISTERS happened at a New York museum while looking at art by a woman who’d adopted the name of a midwestern city.

Novelist Sue Monk Kidd, a southerner herself, saw the names of Sarah and Angelina Grimke at the Brooklyn Museum while she was viewing Judy Chicago’s “The Dinner Party,” an iconic work that pays tribute to women in history.

And though Ms. Kidd lived in Charleston, S.C., where the Grimke sisters are from, she’d never heard of them before.

“Their names were listed along with 999 other women who had made significant contributions to history,” she says. “There they were, these two sisters, listed as the first abolitionists and women’s rights pioneers. That was very intriguing to me. I found out they were from Charleston, where I was living. I didn’t know about them. How did I miss them?

“The more I read about them, the more captivated I became about their lives and what they did.”

Initially, she says, she thought she’d narrate a novel from both their voices, but then she realized she wanted to focus on Sarah’s story, as well as the story of an enslaved woman.

The end result was Ms. Kidd’s third novel, “The Invention of Wings.”

Now a resident of Marco Island, Ms. Kidd will be a featured author at the Southwest Florida Reading Festival on Saturday, March 15, in downtown Fort Myers. The event, which is free, runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Ms. Kidd will speak at 10 a.m. and sign books afterwards.
