Big Greek Festival at Saint Andrew Greek Orthodox Church – CELEBRATING 44 Years of Food, Music and Folk Dancing: Thousands of appetites throughout the tri-state area anticipate the annual festival hosted by St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church. A distraction from the typical neighborhood meal, accompanied by unique entertainment, the Big Greek Festival (http;//www.BigGreekFestival.com) is the perfect pastime.
People who visit our festival are treated to the results of weeks of preparation – fabulous traditional dishes and ethnic dance performances, music and much, much more.
The St. Andrew dance troupe is the result of efforts by the Greek community to preserve the character and ties to Greek culture, competing with other groups in regional competitions. Weekly practice by the members hones their skills, and the community frequently calls on the troupe to entertain visitors at events.
The women who prepare the various plated dishes follow in the footsteps of tradition, like their mothers and grandmothers did. Humble in their work, they are committed to sharing the tastes of Greece with the public, wrapping countless dozens of delicacies including the widely recognized sweet honey and nut Baklava.
Traditional gyros are the work of Greek men, who enjoy the chance to show their culinary talents; their focus is on spreading the scent of the grill’s good cooking to entice passers-by to stop and stay awhile, and enjoy the music.
The three-day festival allows people from further away to join in – to be immersed in a little bit of Greece on the U.S. side of the ocean and join in Greek traditions of community gathering, music and dance entertainment, and a characteristic celebration of all things Greek.
For a few short days, visitors transport people to another time and place, seeing firsthand artistic talent in music, dancing and handicrafts made by Greeks.
Visitors can tour the church and see colorful icons and intricate wood carvings, and ornate colored glass windows.
